Population and Community Dynamics at the Farm-Scale
Within a single tool, ShellSIM simulates population and community dynamics:
the User defining any combination of up to 14 shellfish species, including explicit definition of
associated spatial distributions (i.e. farm layout) and practice (i.e. seeding, mortality and harvesting), whether suspended or on the bottom.
Environmental Effects and Status
ShellSIM outputs help quantify consequences of natural shellfish communities and/or
culture practise for both shellfish production and the environment, with applications
that include management of water quality, ecological status, habitat conservation, shellfish restoration,
integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA), nitrogen or carbon credits for nutrient trading, profit
maximisation and aquaculture insurance.
System-Scale Analyses
System-scale analyses (Tab to Applications) by Managers and Regulators are enabled by integration of
ShellSIM within GIS frameworks such as include
MarGISTM and ShellGIS,
including within screening tools such developed during the ECASA,
SPEAR, SMILE
and UISCE Projects
